Instructor Certification General Information

HEMAA Instructor Certification

The restructured Instructor Certification Program is intended to provide instructors with the tools to run safe and effective classes. It is not an assessment of an applicant’s knowledge of specific martial systems or understanding of historical context, but rather a training program covering safety policies, leadership, and basic teaching skills. Training is offered through a combination of written and online materials, and in-person workshops exploring learning methods and pedagogical approaches.

Certification requirements:
• Complete an OSHA-approved first aid course
• Complete the HEMA Alliance's SafeSport training course
• Pass a background check through a third party organization
• Pass a written exam
• Pass a practical 25 minute teaching exam
Taking an in-person training workshop is recommended but not required

Certifications will expire after three years. To renew a certification, the instructor must repeat the SafeSport training and present proof of current first aid certification. There will also be a continuing education requirement (details TBD). The written and practical exams do not need to be repeated.

HEMAA Instructor Certification Inquiry

Please fill out the form to begin the certification process. Following submission, you’ll be contacted by the Instructor Certification team for additional information.

The first step will be to confirm first aid certification. You will then be asked to complete a 90 minute SafeSport training program and a background check. The HEMAA covers the cost of both of these services.

The US Center for SafeSport is an independent nonprofit committed to building a sport community where participants can work and learn together free of emotional, physical and sexual abuse and misconduct.

The HEMAA has partnered with Stirling Volunteers to perform a background check that includes a social security number trace, criminal convictions check, and checking against national watch lists and sex offender registries. The HEMAA only receives a basic “flag” report. The information you provide remains confidential and is not shared with the HEMAA.
